자리 has the following meanings
(1) [=공간] room; space
- 자리를 차지하다 : take up[occupy] much room[space]
- 이 옷장은 자리를 너무 많이 차지한다 : This wardrobe takes up too much room[a lot of space]
- 이제는 텔레비전을 놓을 자리가 없다 : There's no room left for a TV set
- 접을 수 있는 침대는 자리를 별로 차지하지 않는다 : A folding bed takes[requires] little room[space]
- 모두가 앉을 자리는 없다 : There is not enough room for everyone to sit down
- 이 페이지에는 더 써 놓을 자리가 없다 : There is no more space to write in on this page
- 주차할 자리를 찾는 데 힘이 들었다 : We had a hard time finding a parking space[place]
(2) [=흔적] a mark; a print; a trace; [=상처의 흔적] a scar; [=건물 등의 흔적] an old[former] site; [유적의 흔적] ruins
- 총알이 박힌 자리 : a mark of a bullet
- 그녀의 등에는 수술한 자리가 남아 있다 : She has a scar from an operation on her back
- 이것이 옛날에 성이 있던 자리이다 : This is the old[former] site of the castle
- 그 마을에는 폭격을 당한 자리가 남아 있다 : There are bombsites in the village
(3) [=좌석] a seat; [=지정된 좌석] a place
- 빈 자리 : a vacant seat
- 자리에 앉다 : sit (down) / take[have] one's seat / seat oneself
- 자리에서 일어서다 : rise (up) from one's seat
- 남에게 자리를 양보하다 : give one's seat to a person
- 자리를 함께 하다 : sit (side by side) together
- 자리에 앉아 주십시오 : Please sit down. / Please take your seat. / Please be seated
- 그는 버스에서 그 노인에게 자리를 양보했다 : He gave his seat on the bus to the old man
- 그는 두 사람 몫의 자리를 차지하고 있다 : He occupies enough space for two (people)
- 네가 돌아올 때까지 자리를 잡아 두지 : I'll keep your seat (for you) until you come back
- 「자리를 잡을 수 있을까」「다음 기차를 기다리면 틀림없어」 : "Do you think we can get our seats?" "I'm sure we can if we wait for the next train."
- 「이 자리는 비어 있습니까」 「아니오, 사람이 있습니다」" : Is this seat[place] vacant[free / open]?" "No, it's taken[occupied]."
- 옆 자리에 앉은 사람이 담배를 권했다 : The man sitting next to me offered me a cigarette
- 그는 지금 자리에 없습니다 : He isn't at his desk right now
- 그 강당에는 자리가 1,000개 있다 : The auditorium seats a thousand person[has a thousand seats]
- 그는 자리를 박차고 나가 버렸다 : He flung out of the room
- 내 자리를 비워 두시오 : Please make room for me
(4) [직위·지위] a position; a post; a situation
- 빈 자리 : a vacancy / a vacant post
- 장관[각료] 자리 : a portfolio (of a Minister) / a ministerial post / a seat in the cabinet
- 높은 자리에 있는 사람 : a very important person / a VIP
- 권력의 자리에 오르다 : reach a position of authority; rise to power
- 그는 시장 자리를 노리고 있다 : He has an eye on the office of major
- 부사장 자리가 하나 비어 있다 : One post for a vice-president is vacant
- 그 학교에 선생 자리가 하나 났다 : There is an opening for a teacher at that school
- 나는 은행에 자리를 얻었다 : I found a position with a bank
- 자리가 나면 자네 문제를 고려해 보지 : You will be considered when there is a vacancy
- 그는 권력의 자리를 지키기 위해서는 무슨 일이나 한다 : He would try anything to keep himself[remain] in power
(5) [=특정한 기회] an occasion; an opportunity; [=특정한 장소] a spot; [=현장] the scene
- 사고[범죄]가 일어난 자리 : the scene of accident[crime]
- 그는 그 자리에 어울리는 말을 했다 : He said things suitable for the occasion
- 그녀는 그 자리에 어울리는 옷을 입고 있었다 : She was properly dressed for the occasion
- 그는 그 자리에서 사건을 해결했다 : He settled down the matter on the spot[at once]
- 이 자리를 빌려 한 말씀 드리겠습니다 : Let me take this opportunity to tell you a word. / On this occasion I will tell a word
- 왜 그 자리에서 항의하지 않았소 : Why didn't you protest then and there?
- 그의 약속은 그 자리에서만의 것들이니 신용할 수가 없다 : He makes promises just for the occasion, so he can't be trusted
- 이 옷은 어느 자리에서나 입을 수 있다 : This dress can be worn on all occasions
- 그의 연설은 그 자리에 있던 사람들에게 깊은 감명을 주었다 : His speech impressed those present
(6) [=위치] a position; a location; a situation
- 자리가 좋다[나쁘다] : be well[badly] situated
- 그 가게는 자리가 좋다 : The store is favorably located[situated]. / The store is located in an advantageous position
- 자리가 좋으면 장사가 잘된다 : The locality brings a great deal of business
- 나는 무대 전체가 잘 보이는 자리에 있었다 : I was in a good position to see the whole stage
- 자리를 뜨다 : leave one's seat
- 그는 급한 볼일이 있어 자리를 떴다 : He left (his seat) on urgent business
(7) [=숫자의 위치] a figure; (소수점 이하의) a place
- 2[3 / 4]자리의 숫자 : double[three / four] figures / a two-[three- / four-]digit number
- 소수점 이하 2자리까지 계산하다 : calculate it to two decimals[decimal places]
- 계산이 한 자리 틀렸다 : My calculation was one digit off. / I miscalculated by one digit
- 그 건물의 건축비는 10 자리 숫자에 이른다 : The construction cost of the building reaches ten figures
(8) [=별자리] constellation; group of stars
- 큰곰자리 : the Great Bear / the Big Dipper
(9) [=왕골 등으로 짠 깔개] a mat; <집합적> matting
- 돗 자리 : a rush mat
- 자리를 깔다 : spread a mat
- 자리를 깔고 눕다 : lie down on the mat
(10) [=이부자리] bedding; bedclothes
- 자리를 펴다 : put down bedding / spread[lay out] bedding
- 자리를 걷다 = 잠자리를 정리하다 : put away the bedding
(11) [=잠자리] a bed
- 자리를 보다 = 잠을 잘 준비를 하다 : make[prepare / lay] a bed
- 자리에 들다 : go to bed
