* 잠그다 has the following meanings
* 잠갔다 : past tense of 잠기다 by '-았-'; 으 of 그 erased and ㄱ + -았 contracted into 갔
(1) [=문 등을 잠그다] lock (up); fasten
- 문을 잠그다 : lock[fasten] a door
- 창고 잠그는 것을 잊지 말아라 : Don't forget to lock up the warehouse
- 가게 잠그는 것을 잊지 말아라 : Don't forget to lock up the shop
- 문이나 창문을 모두 잠갔어요 : Have you fastened all the doors and windows?
(2) [=수도 등을 잠그다] turn off
- 수도를 잠그다 : turn off the tap[water]
- 가스를 잠그다 : turn off the gas / turn the gas out
- 나는 수도 잠그는 것을 잊어버렸다 : I forgot to turn off the water
(3) [=액체 속에 잠그다] soak; [=충분히 잠그다] immerse; [=잠깐 잠그다] dip; [=잠가 두다] steep
- 더러운 접시를 비눗물에 잠그다 : soak dirty dishes in soapy water
- 펜을 잉크에 잠그다 : dip his pen in the ink
- 세탁물을 처음에 물에 잠가 두는 것이 잘 빨린다 : Clothes will wash better if you soak[steep] them first (in water)
2. 잠기다 has the following meanings
* 잠기다 : passive form of 잠그다 by '-이-'; the 으 of 잠그다 erased before '-이-';
* 잠겼다 : past tense of 잠기다 by '-였-'; 기 + -였 contracted into 겼
1) [문·자물쇠 등이 잠기다] be locked; lock; be fastened
- 자물쇠가 잠긴 문 : a locked door
- 문의 자물쇠가 잠기지 않는다 : The door won't lock.
- 이 블라우스의 단추는 잘 잠기지 않는다 : The buttons on this blouse are hard to fasten
2) [목이 쉬다] get[become / grow] hoarse[husky / harsh]; hoarsen; have a frog in the throat
- 너무 소리를 질러 목이 잠기다 : shout[shriek] oneself hoarse
- 감기 때문에 목이 꽉 잠겼다 : I lost my voice because of a cold
- 그는 목이 잠겨 있다 : His voice is hoarse
3) [물 속에 잠기다] soak[be soaked] ; be immersed [steeped] ; [=수몰되다] be submerged ; be flooded ; be under
- 물에 잠긴 배 a waterlogged boat
- 온 마을이 물에 잠겼다 : The whole village was submerged[flooded]. / The whole village was under water
- 우리 집이 방바닥 밑[위]까지 물에 잠겼다 : Our house was flooded below[above] the floor level
- 나는 욕조 물에 잠겨 위스키를 마셨다 : I drank whisky while soaking[I soaked] in the bath
- 고래는 오랜 시간 물속에 잠겨 있을 수 있다 : The whale can remain[stay] underwater for a long time
4) [=열중하다] be absorbed[engrossed / immersed] in; be intent[bent] on; give oneself[be given] to
- 생각에 잠기다 : be lost[sunk] in thought
- 그녀는 슬픔에 잠겨 있다 : She is sunk in sorrow
- 온 도시가 슬픔에 잠긴 것처럼 보였다 : The whole town had a grief-stricken look about it
- 그는 비탄에 잠겨 있었다 : He was overwhelmed by[with] grief. / Grief overwhelmed him
- 그는 명상에 잠겨 있다 : He is lost in meditation [contemplation]
- 나는 행복[추억]에 잠겼다 : I lost myself in happiness [reminiscences]
5) [돈 등이 잠기다] be tied up; be locked up
- 자본은 토지에 잠겨 있었다 : The capital was locked up in land
